Around 450,000 visitors to the fan mile. The stadium 92 percent sold out. Plus a peaceful, fair and party-like atmosphere – the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Frankfurt was a memorable event for city on the Main and a great image-building promotion for Frankfurt – the Heart of Women’s Football.
The game between the USA and Japan in Frankfurt on Sunday is, with Germany not having made it, a dream final for many in the city. The two nations meeting to contest the 2011 Women’s World Cup not only have sizable local communities in Frankfurt, they are also important tourist markets for the city.
“The pictures of such a wonderful atmosphere from our World Cup stadium and from the Frankfurt Football Gardens before, during and after yesterday’s Germany game were once again a great advert for Frankfurt as the heart of women’s football. A happy, peaceful, expectant feeling lay over the city – World Cup fever is now definitely here!” said Lord Mayor Petra Roth, thrilled by the turn-out in Frankfurt for the Women’s World Cup.
Having been properly tested for the first time last weekend, the Frankfurt Football Gardens, Germany’s largest fan mile, passed its test with flying colours! While there were 120,000 visitors there for the ‘Ball Magic’ opening celebrations, the fan mile attracted around 60,000 on the day of the German team’s opening game. Gathered in front of the giant floating LED screens alone there were around 15,000 fans watching the Germany vs. Canada game.
